Reminder: Surviving Black Friday - Tips for Survival

surviving Black Friday image from Zazzle dot com

How can you survive Black Friday? Well, my tip would be just to avoid it completely. Think of all the money you will REALLY save! However, I know lots of you will be braving the malls and stores looking for those perfect deals so I decided to round up some of my favorite tips on surviving Black Friday. Here they are:

First off, wear comfortable shoes! I've seen this on several websites.

My big tip - don't bring your purse. All you need is your credit card, your I.D., your car keys and your cell phone. Just put your stuff in your pockets. You shouldn't bring a purse for several reasons- you won't want to keep track of it, you will be able to move faster without it, you don't want to worry about pickpockets and you don't want to accidentally hit someone with it since folks are already going to be on edge.

TheFrisky.com suggests doing your homework! Plan ahead because the scene will be chaotic. Knowing exactly what deals you are after will help you navigate the madness.

Wikihow suggests making sure you have plenty to eat. Plan out your meals for the day and make sure you keep yourself hydrated and fed. Don't want to risk passing out at a store and getting trampled over!

The Examiner suggests NOT going alone! This is important. Not only can having someone with you help you keep your sanity, you will also be able to cover more ground in the stores and safety in numbers is always a bonus.

The Smoking Jacket had two that I really liked. First, don't bring kids. The risk of losing them, them getting hurt, them getting trampled, etc... is just not worth it! The other, don't cut in line!! This should be a well, duh! kind of tip, but just in case you are remotely thinking of doing something that stupid, I repeat DON'T CUT IN LINE! This includes having someone meet you in line. When people have been waiting for hours to get a coveted item that most likely there is a limited quantity of nothing will make them more irate than your friend joining you in the line right before the store opens. Trust me, don't do it!

LifeHack suggests you check the online deals BEFORE Black Friday as some retailers are offering deals just as good if not better than the ones in the stores. They also suggest you using your credit card for Black Friday purchases because "Many credit card companies have much better return protection than stores: a purchase made on your credit card may have guaranteed refund up to 90 days. Credit cards often offer warranty coverage for free on purchases — a much better deal than most of the service contracts offered by stores. Lastly, some cards offer sale price protection. If the price of your purchase is marked down further than the price you paid within a certain time frame, you can get a refund of the difference."

Frugal Tip of the Day 11/20/12

frugal tip graphic

Have a plan before you walk into any store. Know exactly what you are going in for to make sure you don't spend money on unnecessary items. Make sure you have read the fine print on all coupons you are planning on using in advance as well. I once thought I was going to get $3 off an item only to find out I grabbed the wrong size item at the checkout!

Welcome 970 WFLA Listeners!

970 WFLA Logo

Welcome to my website! I LOVE free stuff as I said on AM Tampa Bay!! If this is your first time here, basically what I do is I scour the newspapers, the radio and television looking for free stuff and stuff that's discounted. Then, I bring the savings to my readers by telling them what I got free and how they can do it too!

On the show I talked about free movie tickets and free dining. As I find deals on these items I post them. Usually with movie tickets there is a time limit involved and with free dining and drinks there is usually a website to visit to sign up for freebies. This website is free to view and you are welcome to look at all of my posts!

Some of my recent posts have been about Christmas and how to save money during the holidays:

Save money on shoe polish by switching to a banana peel instead. According to the 9/19/11 issue of First for Women Magazine the white side of a banana peel can diminish scuff marks on a leather shoe leaving the shoe looking like new. How? The peel has potassium in it which is a key ingredient in leather polish. Simply rub the white side of the peel onto the marks and then wipe it away with a clean cloth.

Frugal Tip of the Day 11/18/12

frugal tip graphic

Add labels to your leftover with masking tape. Add a piece and write on the top or side of the container what is in it along with the date it was made. This will (hopefully) keep you from having to open every container and help you see what needs to be eaten first before going bad in your fridge.

My granny says not to buy Windex but instead wipe down your windows with white distilled vinegar. She swears that it gets all the gunk off your windows and mirrors and costs WAY less than glass cleaner. Just get yourself a spray bottle from the dollar store or a discount shop and pour it in and spray away. As an added bonus to save money use newspaper to wipe it off instead of paper towels. Not only will this reduce streaking, it will save you on paper towel waste and you can still dry and then recycle the newspaper after you use it to clean!

He can be heard on WPOI HOT 101.5 every morning for the “HOT Morning Mix” at 6 a.m., 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and again at 10 p.m. for the “10 o’clock HOT Mix.” DJ Ekin is also the host of Tampa Bay’s Flip TV, which is a weekly countdown show of the area’s best talent on MyTV Tampa Bay.

Groomed in one of the epicenters of turntables, Cerritos, Calif., it was a simple task for DJ Five to rise to the top in Las Vegas. With DMC-caliber skills, impeccable mixing, a vast knowledge of music and a love for hip hop that has spanned decades, DJ Five has emerged as a household name in Sin City’s burgeoning nightlife industry. How to Get Cheap and Free Christmas Gifts

Christmas Presents image
Christmas Presents image downloaded from thechristmasfairyfb.com

If you have been a reader of this blog for more than a minute then you know I LOVE free stuff. What you might not know is I also love sharing free stuff. So, last year that is exactly what I did. For Christmas I got a lot of stuff for free and then presented it all together in care packages for my friends and family. I got free video games for my husband, free razors and toiletries for my mom, dad and sister, dirt cheap wine for my father in law, you get the idea.... Here are five tips to get free and deeply discounted gifts for Christmas:

- Swagbucks. I have talked about Swagbucks in the past. Swagbucks is how I got free video games (read about that here), how I got a free Starbucks gift card (read about that here), how I get lots of free Amazon books and more. Basically the way that Swagbucks works is you get rewarded for searching online. When you use it as your search engine you get random awards of bucks that you can use to cash in for gift cards and other things. When you use it to buy stuff from stores you get more bucks to cash in. Read about how to get the most from Swagbucks HERE and if you want to sign up for a free Swagbucks account do so HERE!

- Amazon Daily Deals- Every day and sometimes every hour Amazon discounts select products 50%, 60%, I've even seen them at 90% off the retail price. Check online for your favorite products and/or products you're considering giving for Christmas.

- Groupon, LivingSocial, Creative Loafing, etc... There is nothing wrong in my opinion in buying a deeply discounted gift certificate for someone as a gift. There is also nothing wrong with getting rewarded for it! With Groupon if you refer friends you get Groupon dollars, with Living Social and Creative Loafing if others buy what you bought via your referral link you get the item free. Pair the gift certificate with something or just buy more gift certificates if you feel like.

- Discounted and Free Groceries- If you have a surplus of free and discounted groceries why not make gift baskets? For example, I made an Italian dinner basket with extra spaghetti, sauce and melba toast one year. I got some awesome coupons to save money on wine last year and when I paired that with a buy one get one free deal I got two bottles dirt cheap!

- Rewards at Pharmacies- Last year I got a bunch of freebies at CVS with coupons and then got rewards bucks for my purchases on top of that. I cashed in the rewards bucks for free gifts!

What are your favorite ways to save money on gifts? What's the best deal you have scored? I want to know! Leave a comment below :)
