Reader Response: Is Gifting a Groupon Tacky?

I am curious...how do you feel about giving Groupons, Living Social Deals, Deal Chicken Coupons, etc... as gifts? Is it tacky?

With gift cards a lot of people have told me they feel like its the easy way out in gift giving and that the person giving the gift should have instead put more thought into the gift. A lot of people have also told me they hate the fact that a gift card tells exactly how much the person spent on them.

With a coupon deal it becomes clear the person spent even less on you. Does that make it a tacky gift? Should it be part of a gift instead of the gift itself?

Chime in. Dying to know your thoughts!

Frugal Tip 9/9/12 Frugal Fly Repellent

Keep flies away from your picnic for pennies. According to the website The Healthy Home Economist you can keep flies away from your picnic simply by filling a gallon size ziploc bag with water, adding a few pennies and then hanging it over your picnic area. Apparently flies steer clear because their eyes are reflectors and the light shining through the bags drive them crazy and keep them away.

I've personally not tried this tip but a gal on Pinterest did and said it was very effective. Definitely would save on bug repellents for picnics if it does work. :)

Frugal Tip 9/7/12 Opt for Boxed Wine

According to the 11/14/11 issue of Woman's World Magazine you can save up to 50% on wine for parties and big gatherings if you simply opt for boxed wine. "In a recent taste test given to wine experts, the pros liked the boxed wines better than most of the bottled wine they tried!"

Bonus is that if there is any leftover, "you can keep it for up to four weeks in your refrigerator and it will still taste fresh."

Frugal Tip 9/6/12 Heal a Cold Sore Cheaply

This is a great tip to keep in your back pocket!
It comes from the First for Women Magazine 12/12/11 issue

To save money on cold sore cream make your own instead. Mix 1 tsp. of baking soda with a drop of water and then use a cotton swab to apply the paste. Let it harden for 10 minutes and then rinse it off. Repeat this daily for a week and watch the sore heal faster! According to the magazine this saves you $13 on a tube of cold sore treatment.

Frugal Tip 9/5/12 Freshen Up a Dingy Leather Bag

In the First for Women 9/19/11 issue of the magazine they suggested freshening up dingy leather bags instead of buying new ones to save money. How? "Dip a clean cloth into a beaten egg white and lightly scrub the outside of the bag for a few minutes, then wipe with a paper towel. The ovalbumin in the egg whites will remove dirt and dust while bringing out the leather's natural shine. (BIG DISCLAIMER- test on an inconspicuous area first!!!) Money saved: $7 for leather cleaner"

Frugal Tip 9/3/12 Boost Happiness for Free

First Magazine's 9/19/11 had an awesome tip to boost happiness for free. Write yourself a kind note. It's that simple. Not only will it boost your happiness, it can boost your self esteem. Sometimes just writing down your awesome traits can make you feel better. Doing it daily "cultivates a self-compassionate mind-set that increases the ability to bounce back from setbacks and upsetting events.

Frugal Tip 9/2/12 Save Those Bananas

Have bananas that are too ripe for your taste to eat alone? Here are some things to do with them from Woman's World issue 5/16/11:

1. Smash them into your oatemal
2. Stir them into caramel sundae topping to serve over vanilla ice cream
3. Layer mashed bananas with yogurt and pineapple for a tropical breakfast parfait
4. Mix smashed bananas with peanut butter on whole wheat bread for a snack. For added gourmet pleasure add apple slices and drizzles of honey.
5. Mix them into oatmeal cookie dough for a softer, slightly cakey cookie treat.
6. Add them to a chicken curry to sweeten and thicken the sauce.
7. Add them to a smoothie.
