container image for card games
image from Jazzie and Tahlia

Today's Frugal Tip is inspired by Jazzie and Tahlia.

To save money on toys avoid having to replace game pieces. For card games keep them in one spot using storage containers. The ones Jazzie and Tahlia used are from IKEA but to save even more money I say re-purpose old baby wipe containers and do the same thing!

frugal tip of the day graphic

This tip is from the Whole Foods July/August 2012 newsletter.

Save money by not letting your condiments go to waste. Grab your condiments and make dressings and spice up deviled eggs. Throw veggies in leftover pickle juice to soak up the flavor, add steak sauce to sloppy joes and other meat dishes and finish off barbecue sauce to make barbecue pizzas instead of traditional ones. Get creative to use the last little bits of everything.

Frugal Tip 8/14/12 Use a Substitute

frugal tip of the day graphic

Need to make dinner or some other recipe but are lacking some ingredients? Rather than waste money on the gas it takes to run to the store, see if you have a substitute for what you need for your recipes. For example, if you need a cup of beef/chicken broth but don't have any you can substitute 1 bouillon cube plus 1 cup boiling water OR 1 tablespoon soy sauce plus enough water to make 1 cup OR 1 cup vegetable broth. Another example: if you need a cup of corn syrup but have none you can sub 1 1/4 cup white sugar plus 1/3 cup water OR 1 cup honey. Check this list of common substitutions out HERE

Frugal Tip 8/7/12 Cancel Unused Subscriptions

frugal tip of the day graphic

Now, considering I said recently to get subscriptions to you favorite magazines this may seem like an odd frugal tip. However, if you are not reading the things you are subscribing too, cancel them! There is no sense paying crazy annual fees for stacks of magazines that are just forming piles of clutter in your place. So, cancel your unused subscriptions and when you really start desiring the opportunity to read a magazine either buy one or go the extra frugal mile and see if you can read it for free online or at the library.

Frugal Tip 8/6/12 Keep an Eye on Your Accounts

frugal tip of the day graphic

I was charged twice for my lunch at a restaurant last month. Odds are this was just a simple error, but paying double doesn't exactly thrill me considering I'm trying to save every penny I can. Spend a little time every week, month or whatever you think is best looking at your bank accounts, credit card statements and any other accounts you have just to make sure you haven't been charged multiple times for transactions and to check for any other errors!

Frugal Tip 8/5/12 Get a Free Credit Report

frugal tip of the day graphic

It's a good idea to get a free credit report each year. Consider getting one from Annual Credit Report just to make sure everything is in order. If your number is higher than you think it should be you can look for errors and work on getting it higher. If your score is low use it as leverage to get lower interest rates.

Frugal Tip 8/4/12 Consider Straight Talk

frugal tip of the day graphic

A year ago I got rid of my Verizon plan and switched to Straight Talk for our cell phones. For about half of what we used to pay on a plan with Verizon we can get unlimited talk, text and web. Straight Talk may not be right for you, but for about half off our cell phone bill it worked out pretty well for me an my husband ;)

Frugal Tip 8/3/12 Sell Your Gold

Frugal Tip 8/1/12 Lose the PMI

frugal tip of the day graphic
This tip was found at the blog Dough Roller:

Get rid of Private Mortgage Insurance. If your down payment was less than 20%, you are probably paying PMI. Once you have a 20% cushion through reducing your debt and home appreciation (yes, prices do go up from time to time), contact your mortgage company to start the process of removing the PMI.
